Building a Hedge Fund From $2,000

People assume a hedge fund starts with money. Mine started with a stubborn idea and almost none. If you’d told the teenager writing BASIC on a smuggled Commodore 64 in communist Prague that he’d one day manage money for banks and pension funds, he’d have laughed. Here’s roughly how the road actually went — and what each stretch taught me.

The retail years (and the wall)

Like most people, I started small and tried everything — discretionary trading, indicators, the endless search for the perfect setup. I made every mistake in the book. The wall I eventually hit was simple: my results depended on me — my mood, my discipline, my attention. That’s not a business. That’s a job you can be fired from by your own psychology.

The shift that changed everything

The turning point was deciding that trading had to become a system — rules a computer could execute, so the outcome didn’t ride on how I felt that Tuesday. That obsession became the Mr. Breakouts formula: a repeatable way to build breakout strategies with a defined Point of Initiation, Space, Filter, Time and Exit. Once building strategies became a process instead of a stroke of luck, the constraint flipped. The question was no longer “can I find an edge?” but “how many good, uncorrelated edges can I combine?”

From strategies to a fund

That reframing is what made a fund possible. I kept building — eventually 2,041 strategies across 34 markets — because portfolio stability comes from having many low-correlated pieces to choose from. A smooth, steadily-rising equity curve built from dozens of diversified strategies is exactly what institutional money wants. It was never my plan to become a money manager. The success of the method simply pulled me there.

What it actually taught me

Two things, mostly. First: freedom is the real product. Automated systems let me run all of this from a laptop in 65 countries — the whole reason this site is called Systems on the Road. Second: the boring parts — validation, correlation, position sizing, health monitoring — are where the money actually lives. The exciting parts are where it dies.

I tell the full story, including the parts I’m less proud of, in The BreakOut Trading Revolution. And if you’re somewhere on your own version of this road, the free Trading System Health Check is a good, honest place to see where you stand.
